Laces for cycling shoes: only for classic models with lace closure

Most modern cycling shoes use BOA dial closures, velcro or a combination. Laces only appear on classic retro cycling shoes and some casual cycling shoes. For those models, thin Thin Laces of 4-5 mm in 100 cm are the right choice — they fit the narrow eyelets and must be tucked away to avoid catching in the chain or pedals. Similar to Mountain Bike Shoes: always tuck the ends away.

Frequently asked questions

Do cycling shoes still have laces?

Rarely. Most modern models use BOA or velcro. Laces appear mainly on retro and casual cycling shoes.

Why must cycling laces be thin?

Cycling shoes have narrow eyelets. The laces must also tuck away compactly to prevent contact with chain and pedals.

Can I use standard flat laces?

Standard 8 mm laces are usually too wide for cycling shoe eyelets. Thin laces of 4-5 mm fit better.
